Bridge-Belot – or simply Belot – is much more than a game. It's a true community and one of the best-loved card traditions in Bulgaria. At the heart of the classic format is team spirit: four players, paired into two teams, test their skills with a 32-card deck. Cards from 7 to Ace are used in all four suits (clubs, diamonds, hearts and spades), calling for strategic thinking, perfect teamwork and good sportsmanship.

How to play Belot
Basic rules of Belot
The game is played with 32 cards by 4 players, split into 2 teams. Each player gets 8 cards. The goal is for your team to score more points than the opponents and be the first to reach 151 points.
Bidding
Players take turns to bid:
1. A suit (trumps) 2. No Trumps 3. All Trumps 4. Pass
If everyone passes, a new deal starts with no points scored.
Play
* If you have a card of the suit led, you must play it.
* In a trump game, if you don't have the suit led, you must play a trump if the rules require it.
* In No Trumps there is no trump suit.
* In All Trumps every suit is played by the trump rules.
Strongest cards
In trumps: Jack → 9 → Ace → 10 → King → Queen → 8 → 7 No Trumps: Ace → 10 → King → Queen → Jack → 9 → 8 → 7.
Announcements
Extra points are awarded for: * Tierce – 20 pts. * Fifty – 50 pts. * Hundred – 100 pts. * Carré – from 100 to 200 pts. * Belot (King and Queen of trumps) – 20 pts.
Scoring
* The last trick is worth 10 bonus points. * In No Trumps, card points are doubled. * The team that called the game must score more points than the opponents, otherwise it is "inside" and loses the deal.
End of the match
The match ends when a team reaches 151 or more points and is in the lead according to the rules of the game.
Useful strategies.
Think your bids through.
Be careful with your bids! Stay measured. Bids that are too optimistic can easily cost you the whole game.
Keep track of who's on lead.
A very important rule. If you're not on lead, be careful with your bids.
Take risks when you're behind on the score.
The game is played to the very end. Nothing is lost until it's over. Trust your instincts.
Don't get cocky when you're winning. Play as a team.
We often lose a game because we're confident and ahead on points, but one small mistake and everything turns against us...
Be careful when bidding "No Trumps".
No Trumps is a dangerous game. It's a tricky bid that demands a lot of thought from the call to the last trick.
Clear the way for your partner's trump suit.
Belot is a team game. Don't play alone. Think about the team and you'll win.
Remember which cards have been played.
Don't give tricks away. Every card matters. Every point is a step towards victory. Count, keep track and you'll win.
Watch what your partner discards.
In the game it's important to follow what your partner is telling you with the cards they throw/discard. The best strategy is to discard a low card of one suit to signal the next one, going clockwise: clubs, diamonds, hearts, spades. That way the chance of working out which suit is wanted is much higher.

Announcing the card combinations you hold – tierce, quarte, quint or carré.

A declaration of three consecutive cards of the same suit. Worth 20 points to the player who declares it.

A declaration of four consecutive cards of the same suit. Worth 50 points to the player who declares it.

A declaration of five or more consecutive cards of the same suit. Worth 100 pts.

A declaration of four cards of the same rank, excluding 7s and 8s. The points depend on the combination.

The Queen and King of the same suit. When played, they are worth 20 pts.

Calculating the points won by each team at the end of the round.

If the team that called the game doesn't score more points than its opponents, it is 'inside' and the opponents take all the points.

When one team wins all the tricks. A valat earns extra points.
